Ambassador Kennedy Celebrates 197th Vatican National Day

Ambassador Genevieve A. Kennedy commemorated the 197th National Day of Vatican City with a celebration that brought together diplomacy, history, and shared values—while also reflecting on the enduring relationship between the Holy See and Liberia.

Vatican National Day, associated with the Feast of Saints Saint Peter and Saint Paul, honours the spiritual foundation of the Holy See and its global mission. In marking this 197th anniversary, Ambassador Kennedy used the occasion not only to celebrate the Vatican’s moral and diplomatic role, but also to highlight the historical ties that connect Liberia and the Catholic Church.

The relationship between Liberia and the Holy See dates back to the 19th century, not long after Liberia’s founding in 1847. Catholic missionary presence began to take root in the region through the Society of African Missions, which played a key role in establishing early Catholic communities, schools, and healthcare institutions. Over time, the Church became an important partner in Liberia’s social development, particularly in education and humanitarian work.

Formal diplomatic relations between Liberia and the Holy See were later established, strengthening cooperation in areas such as peacebuilding, interfaith dialogue, and human development. During Liberia’s periods of civil conflict in the late 20th century, the Catholic Church—supported by the Vatican—was instrumental in advocating for peace, reconciliation, and the protection of human dignity.

In her remarks, Ambassador Kennedy emphasised that the Liberia–Vatican relationship is grounded in shared principles: respect for human life, commitment to social justice, and the promotion of peace. She noted that the Holy See’s global voice continues to resonate in efforts to address inequality, conflict, and humanitarian crises—values that align closely with Liberia’s own aspirations on the international stage.

The celebration gathered diplomats, religious leaders, and members of the Liberian community, reflecting the Vatican’s unique role as both a spiritual authority and a diplomatic actor. It also served as a platform to recognise the ongoing contributions of Catholic institutions in Liberia, from schools to clinics, which remain vital to national development.

As guests reflected on both the 197th Vatican National Day and the historical partnership between Liberia and the Holy See, the event stood as a testament to the power of faith-informed diplomacy and enduring international friendship.

The evening concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening Liberia–Vatican relations—rooted in a shared history and guided by a common vision of peace, dignity, and global solidarity.
